High School Chemistry

The teenager wasn’t exactly beaming as he told his mom how he performed on his most recent chemistry test.

But he wasn’t pouting, either.

“How did you do?” she asked brightly.

“I got a high fail on my chemistry test,” to which he added, “And that’s a move in the right direction!”

The kid’s a natural optimist, what can you do?

His last score was a “low” fail, so to be precise, he’s correct.

He is moving in the right direction, however at this glacial pace, he won’t graduate from high school until the year, 2048.

Mention this to him and he’ll probably reply, “You’re right, but time is on my side!”

There are countless kids who are sweating over earning an A-minus or a B-plus because it could keep them out of the Ivy League hunt. They have therapists who are adept at swathing their psychic wounds, and they overeat, over-worry, and obsess.

He doesn’t "over" anything; least of all lose sleep over a quiz scheduled for the next day.

While his over-achieving peers are applying to countless colleges, he’ll be lucky to wake up on time to take his SAT’s.

But here’s the rub.

If he just squeaks by in school, graduating somehow, and then he attends a junior come-one, come-all college, he can then transfer to a four-year school, earn that degree, and no one will be the wiser.

Including him.

But, don’t dismiss his prospects. If this kid can stay positive in the face of adversity, come what may, he’ll probably do just fine in life.
